The Recording Process
Step one, TRACKING - at this step you record all your basic music tracks. For example bass guitar,
drums, keys, and a scratch vocal. Then you overdub the balance of the music parts, like more guitar work,
back up vocals, etc...
Step two, MIXDOWN - at this step all the music parts are made to come together as a song. Each track is
carefully balanced and EQ'ed to fit into the mix. This step is very, very, time consuming If you rush the
mixdown step your song will show it. All tracks must be heard properly at correct gain levels & EQ. Once
all tracks are properly set, effects can be added for color and improved sound. Several versions of a mix are
done. At the professional level one song can have as many as 20 mixs to choose from for final mastering.
Don't RUSH HERE !! you will be sorry....
Step three, Mastering - this step is often done at a Mastering House or recording studio (we master in
house at Genesis). Mastering is just that to make that song have punch, power, dynamics, color, and overall
blend with the other songs on the CD. Mastering makes the song "Radio Ready" it adds compression,EQ,
and many other trade secrets to make a great master recording. This is the final step before duplication.
Step four, Duplication - at this step copies & artwork is done for your CD. Some studio's
handle this "In House" as well, (at Genesis we do) others send it out to duplication companies
for copies & artwork. Make sure you use a GOOD COMPANY for this step, as some companies
do not make good on there work or promised time frames.
